GM recalls 450,000 pickups, SUVs for faulty brake fluid indicator

Oct 14, 2024Oct 14, 2024

General Motors is recalling nearly 450,000 of its SUVs and pickups because of faulty indicators that may not promptly warn drivers when brake fluid levels are too low.

According to a company filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted Friday, GM said it is recalling various 2023 and 2024 models of pickups and large SUVs because they do not meet safety standards for light-vehicle brake systems.

In its report to NHTSA, dated Sept. 12, GM said the problem came to its attention after a GM engineer on April 18 submitted the issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety program. It said the engineer noticed no illumination of the indicator during a forced brake fluid leak test.

"GM opened a product investigation on April 30, 2024," GM's report reads. "The investigation found that a mismatch in the (electronic brake control module) software and (electronic brake control module) calibrations released to vehicles at the assembly plant causes the system to fail to detect and notify of a brake fluid leak when required by (safety regulations). GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with this condition."

GM dealers got notification of the recall on Sept. 12, the report said. GM said the affected vehicles still meet stopping-distance requirements and can be driven with low brake fluid, but that could reduce braking performance and without a warning light, there's an increased risk of a crash.

The specific vehicles involved include: 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups as well as 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV large SUVs.

GM said the electronic brake control module software will be updated, free of charge, through an over-the-air update or by a dealer. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 28.
